The Summer School programme consists of four modules.
Module I: ‘Introduction, theory and integration’ consists of three days (23 hours) of intensive learning, integration and preparation for practical classes, including: 5 lectures, integration workshops, virtual preparatory training and verification of learning outcomes.
Module II ‘Practical classes’ consists of 4 days (33 hours) of intensive practical tasks on the RV Oceanograf research vessel*, in the field (coastal zone and coastal rivers) and in the WOiG UG laboratory, during which participants will gain knowledge and practical skills in the field of water pollution measurements, macrozoobenthos research, and the use of remote sensing methods for environmental quality monitoring. Participants will also develop communication and teamwork skills.
Module III includes an ‘Educational trip’ (1 day, 8 hours) to the Sealarium in the Marine Station of University of Gdańsk in Hel. Participants will learn about the Station’s activities in the field of research on anthropogenic degradation of the environment of the Gulf of Gdańsk and the Gulf of Puck, the restitution of the grey seal and research on marine mammals found in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea.
Module IV, ‘Problem-based learning’, consists of 2 days (20 hours) of group work, compiling results and conclusions, and concluding with a mini-conference.
*RV Oceanograf is a specialized research vessel owned of the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography (University of Gdańsk, one of the most modern research vessels operating in the Baltic Sea region. Double hull structure of the ship was constructed to meet specialized research environment needs of nature of the Baltic Sea: bathymetry, biological, chemical, physical, geological, magnetic and seismo-acoustic. There are also classes for students of oceanography, geology, aquaculture and marine hydrography held on the ship.
